Using only wax pressed from the seeds of domestic wax tree berries, an expert craftsman makes each Daiyo sumac candle in the traditional hand made method.  Light one while you spend time reflecting on yourself or the departed and the gentle flickering of its flame will quietly light your heart.

The Art of Craftsmanship

Daiyo is the only producer of Japanese candles in Shiga Prefecture, passing on Japan’s ancient fire culture and high quality candles both domestically and abroad.

Currently Japanese wax tree berries are only harvested in a particular area spreading from Wakayama to Shikoku and Kyushu, however only the highest quality wax pressed from these berries is used in the production of these sumac candles which are hand formed through the tegake rolling process for which only ten craftsmen in the world remain.

Tegake is the process where craftsmen spin the wicks while applying layers of wax at roughly 40°C with their hands. It is difficult and time consuming to control the temperature, however candles produced in this way produce almost no dripping or ash and burn with almost no odor. These people friendly and environmentally friendly candles can be used without worrying about place or setting.

Production

Daiyo

Specialty Japanese candle maker founded in the third year of the Taisho Era (1914) operating in Takashima City of Shiga Prefecture. Specializing in the tegake production method using 100% single origin plant based wax their skilled craftsmen meticulously craft each candle. In 2014 they launched the new brand, hitohito, developing products related to candles. Purveying the richness of a life with candle light.

How to Use

  • After putting candle out it takes about five minutes for the wax to harden. Only put the candles back in the box after confirming that the wax has fully hardened.
  • Do not light the candles in the candle holder, light the candles held sideways. After they are lit then stand them up right in the candle holder.
  • Blowing the candles out may spray ash and wax, please be careful.
  • If prolonged burning leads to a long wick please cut it with tweezers leaving about one centimeter.
  • If you put out the candle do not remove the blackened wick as it is necessary relight.
  • Due to the fatty acid in the candles they may develop white powder on the surface, this is a normal feature of sumac candles and does not effect the use.
  • The candles may have slight differences in their length and width. This is due to the hand rolling process, please understand.
  • If the candles stick to the candle holder use hot water to melt the wax and clean it.

How to Store

  • Store the candles in a cool dry place as heat and humidity may soften the candles.
