With its dignified appearance, draped in the accommodativeness of gentle curved lines, a lacquered box. Softly enfolding important items or memories of departed loved ones, a serene box. Its presence assimilates to any setting quietly providing a sense of reassurance.
The Art of Craftsmanship
This box, which one could call the nucleus of Quantum, took its inspiration from the lacquer skinned boxes of lacquer skin artist Yuko Ichikawa. Lacquer skin, or shippi, is a traditional method of layering lacquer on a base of leather, Ms. Ichikawa projecting her outlook on life and death on her works creates organic figures with a soft luster.
With Quantum, in order to produce as soft and warm an aura as possible we have used paper as the base, asking Koizumi Takumi to oversee the technical side of effecting the organic feel.
Mr. Koizumi creates works of a multitude of textures using the lacquer womb, or shitai, method of layering lacquer on paper. By combining the soft yet strong figure of Ms. Ichikawa's box with Mr. Koizumi's knowledge and experice gained through years of research into lacquer along with the skills of artisans, this figure, which embodies figure, which embodies both warmth and dignity, has made it possible to express Quantum's world view.
